Alright ladies….this is something I have been wanting to get done for a few years now. I have made an appointment at least 3 times and have had to cancel because I had to work or something came up. I was always so disappointed because I have heard such wonderful things about this treatment. My dermatologist and where I get filler/botox is Charlotte Skin and Laser and we decided that I should try microneedling to try and help the fine lines I have around my mouth before trying filler. Why didn’t someone tell me not to drink my smoothie that I have had for breakfast for 8 years WITHOUT a straw??? It will also help with the pillow line that I have on the side of my face that stays until around 2pm everyday…and yes, I sleep with a satin pillowcase (doesn’t work for me!)
Here are the benefits to microneedling… you would need 3 treatments to really see a difference. Once you have your first, you would go two more times every four weeks. After tha, once a year because for maintenance. Like with everything, I bet once you start this and see the difference, you will want to put this in the budget for yourself! Man, maintenance can be expensive huh??
What Is Microneedling?
Microneedling is a cosmetic procedure. It involves pricking the skin with tiny sterilized needles. The small wounds cause your body to make more collagen and elastin, which heal your skin and help you look younger. You might also hear it called collagen induction therapy.
Microneedling Benefits
Microneedling may help with issues like:
- Acne
- Hair loss (also called alopecia)
- Dark spots or patches on your skin (hyperpigmentation)
- Large pores
- Reduced skin elasticity
- Scars
- Stretch marks
- Sun damage
- Fine lines and wrinkles (sign me up!!)
Microneedling is less expensive than laser treatments, which can cost about four times as much. Microneedling may work better for people with darker skin tones because it doesn’t involve heat the way laser treatments do, which can affect your skin’s pigmentation, or color. Ask your dermatologist what’s best for your skin — and your budget.
First at Charlotte Skin and Laser, you are taken to a room to change into a robe and get comfortable. After that, someone comes and they apply numbing cream all over your face (and neck if you are getting it in that area as well). You then go to a relaxation room to chill and let the numbing cream do its work for about an hour. Let me tell you…what a weird sensation. I have never had numbing cream and it is bizarre! I am about 1.5 hours out of my treatment now and finally feel like I can smile again.

I am not sure what I was expecting but it wasn’t bad at all. I have had IPL laser done years ago and that was painful! This doesn’t have the heat that lasers do, so it was much better. You can feel the needles more around the edges of your face (chin, near the ears, and under the eyes) and the nose tickled. I didn’t feel a thing on my cheeks. Brooke, my esthetician, said that some people bleed and others don’t and looks to me like I was a bit of a bleeder.

After Brooke finished one side of my face and moved onto the next, the side that had been done felt very hot, prickly and sunburned. After she was finished with my whole face, I felt swollen and just HOT. They gave me an ice pack which helped a lot.

Brooke also told me some people leave pink and others red like a tomato – I will let you decide which you think I am 😉 I was given a product to put on at home for the next 3 days after I wash my face. I am not allowed to wear makeup for at least 24 hours and no exercise for 24 hours as well. I will remain pink/red for about 3 days, 5 at the longest but by then makeup can help that. My face should feel tight and I will have some dry flakes as well. Otherwise, that is it! Let the collagen building begin!
Price for one treatment of Skin Pen is $350.
Women as young as the age of 27 can start because like filler, this treatment builds collagen and that is a huge plus!
Over the next few days, I will share updates in my stories to show you how my face is doing and how it looks after!
Thank you Charlotte Skin and Laser for such a great first experience in microneedling!
